'San Pietro in Vincoli' Church

Built on an elevation in the village, the parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli is undoubtedly Castagnole's most important architectural element.
Its grandeur is almost unusual for a town with a population of about 1,600 inhabitants at the time, when construction began in 1681 and continued for the next twenty years until 1701. Since then, the building stands majestically in the heart of the historic center and attracts the attention of worshippers and tourists who visit it admiring its typical Piedmontese Baroque style.
The interior, which is just as impressive and majestic, features a single, very spacious nave and two rows of chapels, three on each side, where the numerous decorative panels, niches, and gilded stuccoes reproduce a typically Baroque environment embellished by the more than 200 angels placed everywhere along the interior walls, especially in the presbytery area.
Since 2021, the parish church has been the starting point of the 'Cammino del Deserto', a Marian devotional path that aims to be a permanent pilgrimage route between Piedmont and Liguria, leading all the way to the seaside after more than 130 kilometers of walking.
