Remembrance Park

On the hilltop of Castagnole, where a castle stood in the Middle Ages and was later destroyed in 1255, a viewing tower has been erected by Count Paolo Ballada of Saint Robert, who took up residence in Castagnole in 1878. Count Ballada was definitely an eclectic character who excelled in a variety of disciplines ranging from ballistics, artillery and barometric hypsometry to entomology and botany, of which he was very passionate. He was also one of the founders of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and certainly on the tower, which has now become one of the village's inseparable symbols, he spent a lot of time observing his beloved mountains. Today the tower is open to the public and offers a spectacular view of the entire western Alpine arc.
As for the park that hosts the tower, it has been designated by the municipality as a Remembrance Park, in memory of the citizens of Castagnole who fell during World War I.
Hiking enthusiasts should also know that at the entrance of the park start six different itineraries suitable for walking or cycling, including a 'Gran Tour delle Lanze' with a total length of about 27 kilometers. For further information please see www.grantourdellelanze.it
