Prello wall

The Prello is the valley area of the meadows that lie below the wall, where the current 'Pallone Elastico' playing field is also located.
The retaining wall was built in order to widen the extreme part of the old weekly market square in Castagnole, and was erected in 1877 with an initial cost of 14 thousand liras. However, its construction encountered numerous obstacles due to the instability of the terrain and thus required subsequent interventions that raised the cost of the work by a significant amount. For this reason, political opponents of the local government tried to obstruct its construction, denouncing waste and squandering of public money. However, the retaining wall was eventually completed and the square enlarged. Final cost of the work: 45 thousand liras.
Today, the wall hosts the 'bocce' court and an attractive viewpoint from which the tower of Calosso is clearly visible, situated on one of the highest hills that stretch everywhere in the surrounding wine-growing landscape.
