Town hall and Alfieri palace

The cobblestone street going up next to the parish church leads to a small square on which two important buildings, both of medieval origin, face each other.
The building on the right belonged to the Alfieri, who were lords of Castagnole since 1642, and whose palace has recently been restored to its former glory by the Bottallo family.
The other building on the opposite side belonged instead to another prominent family, the De Canis family, originally from Casale, whose members distinguished themselves in service to the royal house of Savoy. This building later became the seat of the Town Hall, on whose facade can be seen the civic coat of arms with the chestnut tree and the two spears arranged in the shape of St. Andrew's cross.
The chestnut tree refers to the chestnut woods that covered our territory in ancient times, while the spears, 'lance' or 'lanze' in italian, would be a tribute to the Lancia marquises, descendants of the famous Aleramo and lords of Castagnole between the 12th and 13th centuries. Hence the name precisely, Castagnole delle Lanze.
